The Shades of Our Skin

Don't be deterred by dark colors. I think some older women tend to think black is slimming, hence they usually have too much of it in their closet. Look at the difference in laundry sorting colors between your parents, and maybe girls in your family. I know my sister and I have bright colors, red, yellows, pink, purples, lavenders, rose colors and then usually for the adults it's black, navys and whites. However just because you're young doesn't mean you can't have some black or dark colors. Really, don't save it all for the next funeral.

There's an old fashioned rule that says black and brown don't go together. I'm here to tell you that's not true. Your purse doesn't have to match your shoes either. I encourage you guys to have one smart, dark outfit, and it should be more than a black t-shirt and a pair of jeans. It could be a simple black dress that really fits, or pairing a dark colored blazer over a black t-shirt with jeans. Similar to what I did in this photo. If black seems harsh for you try navy, my new favorite neutral. If you're feeling really bold wear an oversized black shirt with black leggings, but make sure it's form fitting. Try pairing it with a bright bag or colorfol shoes and accessorizing it. You can also wear a black t-shirt and pep it up with colored jeans and sunglasses. Colors are cool, but black is sophisticated too.

Two Shades

I'm sure most of you have noticed how popular the two tone dress is. My mom bought this for me at Winners (I think) this past year, and when I first got it I didn't actually know how to wear it besides just wearing it as is. However I soon learned. In the past I've paired this dress with a pastel grey/blue jacket, a black jacket and a  custom made jacket from Mod Appeal. (I'm also the professional blogger for Mod Appeal www.themodappeal.com)

Today I paired it with a soft black sweater, which funny I had never thought to pair it with something so simple before. (Duh, I know) So don't be afraid to rework your closet to death, until you have to go shopping like I did today. I cannot wait to show it to you guys. However if you're looking for a dress this season, I think most body types would work well with a two tone dress in the proper size. It's the dress you can wear to work, friend's birthday party, or a slightly less formal event. Basically you can't go wrong with it, so don't be afraid to try the two tone dress.

Mirror Mirror

This classic Brothers' Grimm tale stars Lilly Collins as Snow White, Julia Roberts as the evil queen and Armie Hammer as the handsome Prince.  (**Fun Fact: Did you know that Armie Hammer starred in the "Social Network?") The movie included beautiful costumes and gorgeous set designs, but I've observed that shimmer, decoration and glittering gold cannot make a film. Generally I thought Julia Roberts did a good job, adding a cynical bite to the character of the queen. It seemed as though she was the star of the show which is a fatal mistake to make in a fairy tale movie in which the princess should be the star. Lilly Collins wasn't good nor bad, considering she had significantly less lines than the queen, and looked the part of Snow White. However I must acknowledge the feminist element of Snow White being the one to weld her own sword, and fight her own battle. I love that! I love fairytales, but why shouldn't girls save the day? ("Ever After" starring Drew Barrymore does this as well.) A few personal critiques is that I didn't care much for the "puppy dog spell" and it wasn't really necessary for the apple to make an appearance at all. This film is aesthetically pleasing, but without the costumes, the sets, the gold, and the sparkle the script looks pretty barren.

The Movie Contest

This spring/summer two Snow White movies are being released. Mirror Mirror starring Lilly Collins and one starring Kristen Stewart. (This will be good.) I will do a separate movie review on each one and then compare and contrast the two upon the release of Snow White and the Huntsman starring Kristen Stewart, and I will also let you decide which one you think is better so stay posted!

So I Survived....

**Check out my movie review on Valentine's Day. Also stay tuned I'll be doing more "fashion editorial" & "lookbook" inspired shoots this summer, and probably a slideshow. If you have any fun ideas, comments, criticism or feedback post on the facebook page.

Dear readers, I apologize in advance for my hiatus. University exams are CRAZY. I.e. becoming a hermit in sweatpants studying until your brain bleeds. So glad that's over. This is an outfit I wore recently to go out to celebrate a family birthday. I think I can admire each piece for itself. The bad-ass leather skirt with black tights, the comfy sweater and the cute shirt. I think the contrast is just really appealing to the eye. I also think it's an approachable look. The long sweater is a comfortable staple that most of us probably have in our closets, any cardigan/sweater will do paired with any t-shirt. I was really inspired by the leather shorts that Ashley Greene is wearing, so I mimicked it with the leather (ok vinyl) skirt that I had.

If your not comfortable or daring enough to rock the leather short or mini you can do the same look with denim cutoffs. I think my whole thing with this outfit was that I loved the idea of something short with something long. It's an interesting proportion, so try pairing a long cardigan with denim cuttoffs. It will make for a great look this summer, hence my summer vacay officially starts now.

Review

This  Gary Marshall film is set in sunny California centering around multiple couples and singles around Valentine's Day. This movie set around Valentine's Day has it all, the happily in love couples, the cheaters, the ballers, young love, old love, and the promising ones. However Gary Marshall's film is terribly predictable. You could probably call every shot, every break up and every kiss. While some of the characters individually seem promising, the film is highly cliche.

My Personal Take

**Fun Fact: Gary Marshall is the director of "Pretty Woman" and "Princess Diaries."

(Just a fun personal observation I wanted to share with you guys.)

So I noticed that Gary Marshall has a method to his madness. Although the plots for his recent star studded films, "Valentine's Day" and "New Years Eve" are highly predictable, he tries to cast stars in roles that are atypical to how they are usually portrayed. For example, in "New Years Eve" Ashton Kutcher who in real life is married to a cougar, always dates someone young in his movies. He always puts the best looking person with the least unexpected person, and anyone who's previously starred in a romantic comedy usually gets their heart broken. In this film Taylor Swift plays a bit of a parody of herself seeing that her character is a love sick dumb blonde, -- (not that I don't love Taylor Swift I do)--and Emma Roberts who normally has a squeaky clean reputation plots to give away her virginity to her boyfriend. Just thought those little ironic details were interesting.
