For the Wannabes

This is a simple outfit unlike what I usually wear. I think a woman really has poise though when she can dress simple and look beautiful and elegant. I don't fit into this category, but it's a nice ideal. This leather jacket was a gift so I don't know where it's from. I've seen them sold in Guess, Costa Blanca, and Mango or Banana Republic would probably have them. (The stores named after fruits usually sell good clothes lol.) A leather jacket is worth investing in because it's the only piece you can buy that won't go out of style if you buy a classic look, you can wear when you're thirty, and doesn't go in the washing machine. I think I was trying to chanel the simple, sexy, allure Keira Knightley has when she's wearing her cream leather outfit in the Mademoiselle Coco perfume commercial; or that same elegant vibe that Angelina Jolie has when she throws on something as sophisticated as a leather jacket. I realized I might have not achieved the effect of such high standards, but it was worth trying. This is for the wannabes.

Bridesmaids

imdb.com
Annie is a comical, yet cynical woman who lives in Milwaukee with a deadend job and is stuck in a bit of a rut; but when her best friend Lillian gets engaged life is never the same. Besides the long list of  duties that come with being the brides best friend there are some other things Annie will have to attend to, like being maid of honor and part of one of the most notorious bridesmaid parties of all time.

The key to this movie, is that each bridesmaid is the most atypical bridesmaid you've ever seen. There's Rita, the most crass housewife you'll ever meet, Becca the "perky" newlywed, Megan the only woman who lacks discretion, class, and grace, but will make you laugh your ass off-- She's my favorite :)-- and Helen, that b*** kidding, but only sometimes. You'll laugh for many reasons, but the real joke is that this wedding is everything a wedding isn't supposed to be, so picture that. In the style of a true comedy one hilarious gag preceds another--The airplace scene is one of my favorites--, and because this is a female comedy it's still chuck full of the stuff we love, that b*** moments, and cute cops. Guys will love it too due to the gross out gags and comic appeal, and Annie of course learns exactly what friends are for.

Lost In Translation

Imdb.com
The film opens with a frame of the hourglass of a woman's body sleeping in bed. I'm curious about why the film opened with a direct attraction to the male gaze. The beginning of the film doesn't have much dialogue, but it still draws you into the character's life. Unlike most films, Lost in Translation gives you a chance to explore the in depth's of the characters lives and circumstances before diving head on into a plot. The only similarities these characters seem to have in the beginning is that they are both searching for something. Then one night this retired American actor and lonely newlywed have a conversation at a bar in Tokyo that results in an unique relationship.

Bob and Charlotte's friendship seems childlike or youthful. Charlotte especially seems to possess childlike qualities. She dons serious grown-up clothes, yet will run in the streets with no shoes on, dress up in wigs, and be cradled in an older person's arms. Throughout the movie it's hard to categorize their relationship. It's platonic, but that may not be obvious. You'll probably want to categorize it as romantic, but truthfully it's a father-daughter relationship. Charlotte is looking for love yes, but she also craves attention and someone to cherish her. That one-sided kind of need could perhaps only be satisfied in a father-daughter type relationship. Bob in his mid-life crisis also realizes that although it may not be obvious he's lived a full life which could be useful to others such as Charlotte and the information she wants to glean from him about marriage, life, and finding herself. This intellectual drama allows the viewer to fully explore the characters within the film, and discuss existential dilemmas.

Screen - I'll admit this movie is slow-moving for some, but reads deep like a good book. Enjoy one of Sofia Coppola's best directorial projects, Lost in Translation.

The Time Traveler's Wife

Imdb.com
The film opens around Christmastime with a mother driving her son, Henry in the car. They are involved in a car accident, and Henry's mother dies on impact, but Henry survives by time traveling back to a scene two weeks prior to the accident.

Henry is a man with a genetic disorder that allows him to time travel. He meets Claire in a bar, whom he's met in the past as a little girl. When Henry and Claire meet in the meadow behind Claire's parents house it seems unusual to see an adult and child talking so cordially about the future. It's also unusal how the first time we meet Claire she seems to know that she will end up with Henry, but there relationship still seems to just begin impulsively and too soon, as though someone started the fairytale with a push button start.

Throughout the movie it feels like you're reading a diary in fragments. Stories from multiple perspectives or that may diverge back into the past usually make great stories, but not in this particular case. For this film I would recommend reading the book, which I think would make for a great story, but can't be appreciated in film. At the very least I think it wasn't properly portrayed for its own sake. The end of the movie does become quite entertaining and engaging, but only after about an hour and a half. This story is best read.

Jodi Picoult's Salem Falls The Movie

jodipiccoult.com
The film opens with a teenage girl praying a Wiccan ritual in her bedroom. Her and her three friends are followers of Wicca and practive rituals day and night. Gillian Duncan is a disturbed young woman who has grown up without a mother, and is (played by Amanda Michalka). She had minor roles in the films Lovely Bones and Super 8. And for any old Disney fanatics who might remember, she's the sister of Aly Michalka who starred in Disney's "Phil of the Future," and they had a minor CD release.

Things go for a ride when a young, handsome teacher named Jack enters Salem Falls, and Addie owner of the local diner offers him a job and he takes it. However each character in the film seems to have their cross to bear. Gillian persists with her advances towards the older, handsome Jack, meanwhile Addie is still trying to accept the death of her young daughter. After working so closely Jack and Addie become close, and a relationship develops between them. Salem Falls, however is a town that doesn't like strangers. When Jack decides to stay he must register as a sex offender an accusation that he went to prison for prior to his life in Salem Falls. Things spin out of control, and loyalty must be found, and truth must be sought.

Wanted

Imdb.com
"It's my anorexic boss's birthday." This is the opening line of the movie, since it begins with an unsatisfied young man in the middle of one of those terrible office parties. Wesley Gibson is in a dead end-tedious job and his girlfriend is cheating on him with his best friend. Life couldn't possibly get any worse, or so he thinks. He also wonders if his father who left him at 7 days old even knows he exists, until a secret unfolds and the chase begins.

Many action scenes were filmed in slow motion to portray Wesley's superhuman condition which is really effective. And when Fox, (played by Angelina Jolie) comes onto the scene with her sexy, sophisticated, non-apolegetic attitude there's no turning back. There's no amount of awesomeness to describe her tough exterior and when she pulls out her giant revolver with the purse on her arm you absolutely adore the superwoman asthetic. The car chase scene is exhilirating and you honestly feel bad for Wesley Gibson who is still just trying to get his act together.

But Wesley Gibson's true power is revealed when he finds out he is the son of a powerful assasin and has a phenomenal ability to react faster than any other human. He enters the routine of the Fraternity until fate comes along with a hellish twist. One bullet blows your mind after another, nominated for two Academy Awards for Best Sound Editing and Sound Mixing this action flick becomes dreadfully delightful. And as for the end of the film, well that's just another story. ;)

Your Spring Shopping List

From Instyle.com
Yes, I've talked a lot about spring, but chances are you're still just swirling and wonder. Does spring 2012 fashion mean anything to mean. I mean I just want to know what to wear to school tomorrow? Hence I've put together an easy shopping list. I've put together 14 items/elements, but realistically I know we'll be able to buy about 3 of them, (myself included.) But at least you have options, and I promise at least several of these options will be affordable. Also the best thing is that spring I'll say officially begins in March, so you have March, April, and May. :)

1) Global Prints:  are prints that remind you of somewhere, exotic and that mimic something tribal. Here's an example of this cotton dress from H&M for $59.95. You could wait until you can afford your own plane ticket, but on the bright side you can go around the world with your fashion, before March Break is over.

From another blog
2) Ocean Tones: any blue that reminds you of the ocean, azure, turquoise, light blue, baby blue all apply. Here's some examples.

From other fashion blog
3) Printed pants: I know you're scared, because somehow everyone seems hesitant about this trend at first. But I'm daring you and myself to try it. Ok you guys can hold me to it. I"ll try printed pants/shorts once, but I had a friend you wore some python printed pants and she looked awesome. And honestly she didn't turn as many heads (in a bad way) as you'd expect. I think even her boyfriend liked them so there proof! Now you have to try them.

4) Mixed Textures: I thought this was a really interesting trend, because I can't say I've seen this look repeated in fashion before, at least not too many times. So basically try a try made with two different textures. A simple easy one is to try lace and sheer for example.

Instyle.com
5) Pleated Skirts: Okay this is going to rank up there as one of my favourite trends of the season. I think we all know what a pleated skirt is. It really is just a skirt with pleats. You can create a school girl/Gossip Girl inspired piece with this look, or you can just wear it with any simple shirt. I don't think you can go to wrong with it.

6) Full Skirts: These are rounder, A-line skirts. They are usually just slighyly above the knee, below the knee, or calf-length. I think it's a very classic style and again can be paired with a simple shirt.

7) Leather Shorts: This is a really hot trend that I'm excited about. I think I've highlighted a beloved mini leather skirt that I have in some of my posts. So it's only natural that I would be excited about leather shorts. Maybe the obsession stems from the fact that a good girl can look so bad-ass.

Instyle.com

From susantheresraysofsunshine.blogspot.com
8) Little White Dress: it's the new LBD people (little black dress), introducing the LWD (little white dress). This is a trend I actually clearly remember from last summer actually. Closer to the end of summer. I don't know if I personally saw it take off a lot, but in my small town who knows? But since this is an idea that was from last year I'm pretty sure it will take off. I'm also predicting that we'll be carrying this look right into summer, so it'll be a great investment.

instyle.com
9) Neon Pink: I think neon was big last year or at least a couple years ago closer to back to school. I remember once in high school we had a neon theme dress day. So I recall that not a lot of people born in the 90s have neon. IF and I mean IF it's tasteful see if your mom has any great neon that is still wearable from her days. But be leary of the 80s. So this is something that you'll probably have to buy. I'm going to recommend Forever 21 because, they usually have brightly colored clothing all year round. No wonder it feels like springtime in there. :)
From other fashion blog

10) Peplum: which we already discuss, but a quick repetez is that it's a blouse that's cinched with pleats. A.k.a. see Ashley Greene below.

instyle.com

11) Off-the Shoulder: I don't know if most of you will remember or know about this, but the first time I considered off-the-shoulder I recalled Lady Di's  off-the-shoulder dress. This is a really great summer look, any off the shoulder top paired with shorts, but I also seen it worn all year round. Actually I notice it's popular amongst the girls at school to wear off the shoulder tops. So try it, you can probably buy this kind of thing in almost any "young" store including Garage, Aeropostale, American Eagle, Abercrombie, and Hollister.

12) Sheer Print: There can be nothing more beautiful and relaxed then a sheer print. It's right on trend with the modern romance theme, and it gives an innocent elegance that looks like you weren't even trying to look good like Michelle Williams. I just had a nostalgic Lady Diana moment, and since we're talking about sheer prints it reminded me of one of the first pictures that was taken of her as a potential royal. Apparently she was teaching kindergarten at the time and expected to marry the prince. She went to give the cameras one picture and didn't realize how sunny it was with her sheer print. Bless her heart.

13) Head-To-Toe Neutral or Neutrals

I'm really colorful at least in fashion. So sometimes I appreciate neutrals and sometimes I don't. But it can be a really sexy look as our hot tamales Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Heidi Klum show us here. So try it, especially with a rosy glow or a good bronzer.

instyle.com

14) High-Slit Skirt: Ok I've gotta laugh a little at this look. I think it was big either in the 80s or 90s, and everyone would wear this on the red carpet and think they're oh so sexy, but Amanda Seyfried shows us it still can be. When it comes to the slit, you can make it as high or as subtle as you want. You're the judge. :)

Spring Fashion For Your Body Type!

**note photos in this post we're not taking by this site' head administrator. These photos were taken from google and instyle.com

Drop Waist

google
Drop-waisted dresses are basically dresses where the bodice actually reaches the waist. I myself just recently learned that is style is originally from the 1920s flappers. I highly admire the sophistication, glamour and style of the 1920s. Although drop-waist can be elegant, beware of your body type. It's not for everyone. Drop-waist is better for women with very straight, square bodies, basically boyish figures. If you have broad shoulders this look can also be useful, because it will emphasize your waist instead of your shoulders. Also if you have a petite frame or body type and would like to add more curves, drop waist is for you. Beware however, if you are heart shaped -- I'm heart shaped, basically if you have a medium sized waist and bust size, but have very slender legs. You're more slender on the lower half of your body, like how a heart or an apple narrows at the bottom-- or if you're very curvy, or a plus size girl. The drop waist will cinch your waist in a bad way, and result in muffin top, or in my case make you look two sizes bigger than you actually are. Drop-waist is something I personally don't invest in because it doesn't suit my body type, so be aware of your body type.
instyle.com

Assymetric Hem

This look is basically exactly what the title says an assymetric hem, which means a hem that is cut unevenly or an a slant like in the Selena Gomez picture below. This is a great trend for heart-shaped, petite, tall, broad-shouldered or boyish-figured girls. However if you already possess voluptuous curves, or larger or more muscular legs you might want to reconsider this look; or at the very least make sure you find the right assymetrical hem for your body. Remember don't be a fashion victim. No matter what size you are there's some things that aren't for everyone.

Peplum

instyle.com
Peplum is a new style that I actually discovered this season. The best way to describe is that it's a blouse that is cinched at the waist with pleats. Peplum does a couple of things. It cinches your waist, and it creates curves. Since it gives you extra curves, if you're already possess beautiful curves, are curvy yourself, or have a larger figure this is a look you might want to pass up. However if you have a boyish figure with no curves, or a petite frame that is also lacking curves, or have a heart-shaped figure and want to accentuate your waist then peplum might be for you. You can pretty much pair peplum with most things, but don't pair it with a baggy loose, or flowy skirt. You might have a proportion problem on your hands, and proportion is very important.

Trends for Everyone

Most of the trends for spring are things that basically everyone can wear because they consist of a lot of prints which everyone can incororate in some way, dresses, purses, shoes, bags etc. But my best pick for everyone would be mad prints. Unless you have a closet full of complete solid color items, most of us possess a few prints, and if you don't now's your time to invest in some. Incorporate prints into your t-shirts, backpacks, flats, and even your shorts. Also my close second pick was a bright day dress, which is any casual dress in a bright color. So find a bright colored dress that suits you and you'll also be right on trend. Enjoy spring, because spring has sprung! (Well for Canadians maybe not literally...:)

Little Lady

The calf-length skirt in this ensemble is an old time favorite of mine. I bought it from a roadshow that came to Costco, suprisingly. This past fall hemlines really dropped, and calf-length actually became popular. I think the trend of slightly lower hemlines has been popular. I remember a couple years ago mini skirts were incorporated into a lot of runway shows, but I think hemlines have been dropping steadly since 2000, at least in the fashion world! The red top was kind of a no brainer to pick up the red in the skirt. Although I do like the lace element in the shoulders. I think both of these pieces express a really great ladylike quality, and I really admire the sophistication of that. So I've appropriately deemed this ensemble the little lady.

Spring 2012 Fashion: Spring Has Sprung!

Fashion is a personal passion of mine, which I think everybody knows by now. I'm like the gamer who counts down to the Halo release, the Twihards who anticipate Breaking Dawn, and the hockey lovers who cry at the beginning of the NHL season. Fashion is my passion, and spring 2012 fashion is finally here. :)

Bright day dresses are in! That basically means any casual dress in every rainbow color. So as long as you snag a day shift in a bright or neon color you're good to go. I haven't personally checked, but you can probably buy these at Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf or even Walmart or Joe Fresh. Usually by the time spring comes around day dresses are sold just about anywhere.

Nature prints are also surprisingly popular. Not my particular taste really, maybe it's an inward reflection of myself since I'm not a nature lover. Oh I go outside, but unfortunately I'm not one of those awesome people who climb mountains or are constantly in water. I'd probably be that much better for it, but now whether you're green, mean or inbetween you can wear your love of nature. I do, however love this great Aldo purse.

This trend is called modern romance. It's anything delicate, lacy, pretty and free-spirited. This is a trend which will also run into fall based on the runways. So basically you can wear it back to school too. Try things like this lacy skirt, or a day dress that's very lightweight.

Spring is almost always categorized by prints, but this year it's mad prints. If you're feeling really bold you can try something like this blue Milly skirt, and if you want to be fashionable and a little more subtle try it in a purse or a shoe like these payless flats.
